Instagram has two AI labels, and an AI influencer usually needs both: the "AI-generated profile" label on the account and the "AI info" label on posts. Turn the profile label on before you post, say it's AI in the bio, and label realistic AI videos. This guide sticks to what Meta and Instagram say on their own pages, and it's not legal advice.
The AI-generated profile label
On 31 August 2026 Instagram renamed its "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile", to show when the person on a profile is generated by AI rather than human. If your account is built around an AI-generated person, Instagram says you can and should apply it. You turn it on by editing your profile and switching on "AI-generated profile".
What happens if you don't
- Instagram notifies unlabeled profiles it detects. In Account Status you can see whether yours is no longer eligible for recommendations, in places like Reels and Explore.
- To become recommendable again, add the label, or appeal if you think the decision was a mistake.
- Profiles that add the label themselves see no change in reach.
Who doesn't need it
A human creator who uses AI tools along the way, for editing or captions, doesn't need the profile label. It's for accounts whose person is AI-generated, which is what an AI influencer is.
The AI info label on posts
- Video and audio: Meta requires you to use its disclosure tool when you post photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was made or altered digitally, and may apply penalties if you don't.
- Photos: still images aren't named in that rule. Meta labels images itself when it detects industry-standard signals that they were AI-generated. We'd add the label to AI photos anyway: with the profile label on, it costs you nothing.
Outside Instagram
If you post the same persona elsewhere, TikTok requires a label on realistic AI images of people, and in the EU the AI Act has required disclosure for professional use since 2 August 2026, fictional people included. Details in how to disclose an AI persona.
A checklist for a new AI influencer account
- Switch on "AI-generated profile" before the first post.
- Say in the bio that the account is AI.
- Label every realistic AI video, and we'd label the photos too.
- Never base the persona on a real, identifiable person. Dittoshot doesn't accept photos for that reason.
- Check Account Status if reach drops suddenly.
What we couldn't verify
Instagram's post doesn't say which countries the profile label rule applies in, or how it detects unlabeled AI profiles, so we don't either. If that changes, we'll update this page.
